Day one of the Pistons Academy Rookie Clinic started off fast and the momentum never stopped as 16 young players participated at the Franklin Athletic Club Tuesday Night. “These players were crazy-awesome” said coach Geo Thomas, “They gave tremendous eye contact, listened well and they hustled all hour long!”
Players were first given an eye test to be sure they were able to see the coaches and all of them passed with flying colors. Then, they worked on their defensive stance and listening drills. 2nd grader Jordan Scott was the best listener and was always in his defensive stance first. “He paid great attention,” said Coach Dan Thomas, “He listened well and then executed what the coaches told him.”
After the warm-ups, players broke off into three groups and worked with each coach on individual drills. Christian B (pictured) was another player who amazed the coaches and worked so hard during the skill stations. “He was awesome!” said Coach Laura, He was really ready to run!”
After a quick drink break, the players worked on ball handling and conditioning and worked up a great sweat. Then it was on to “Players vs Coaches” where the players worked hard while trying to beat the coaches. “They did well for the first day,” said Coach Bryan, “But they have a long way to go before they beat the coaches!”
Next week is bring a friend day where kids will be able to bring a friend for free. As well, registered players will receive their clinic shirts.
