The Pistons Academy Summer Basketball Camp, powered by Kroger, returned to SELCRA this week as 91 campers attended this week long camp at Brighton High School.
Wednesday was another fantastic day at camp as the Brighton girls took over the camp with some very inspired play. “We saw some very strong performances throughout the day that impressed the coaches and all the campers,” said Coach Geo Thomas, “It was very inspirational.”
This could be seen in our new all-girls spotlight game where 13 of the camp’s girls played in front of the boys, the parents and the coaches. “I thought it was a strong game,” said Coach Mitchell who also officiated the game,” The girls are really physical and are not afraid to attack the basket!”
The game was a close one as the White team got off to an early 4-2 lead behind baskets from Sophie Martin and Gabriella Garbacik. But the Blue team’s defense stepped up, especially from Anna Minnick allowing Hailey Kirkwood to score two straight baskets as the Blue team went on to win 8-4.
“If you watched the game closely, you saw some great leadership from players like Kirkwood and Julia Carney,” said Coach Geo, “Carney was always pumping up her teammates with positive energy and encouragement.” Added Coach Beth, “A girl that I would like to recognize is Kendall Peckens because she usually has to play the full game but she loves every second of it. She is a hard worker and a fantastic rebounder. She does an amazing job cheering her team on as well. ”
The rest of the camp had its share of moments as well. In the 4-ball competition, Kirkwood’s Princeton team (8-3-1) went 3-0-1 on the day to move from 5th to 2nd place, just one point behind 1st place Jackson State (8-2-2). As well, the Walrus team set a Division high score of 112 and are undefeated at 9-0. Here are all the 4-Ball stats: 4-Ball Standings
