Wednesday marked day three of four inside the gym at Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield for our annual Pistons Academy “Holiday Hoopmania” Basketball Camp, presented by Kroger. Day three turned out to be our best one yet, as the energy level in the gymnasium was off the charts! There was a big time buzz in the air all day long, as well as some big time performances.
In the Blue Division All-Star Game, following two clutch free throws with 1.4 seconds remaining in regulation, Daniel Green got a tough floater to fall with the score tied in the sudden death overtime. “It was a great individual effort by Daniel to tie the game and then get the winning basket for his team. He has been tremendous all week, and today’s game-winner was just more of the same from him!” said Camp Coach Bryce Allmacher. Deepak Laungani sunk two free throws with just over 10 seconds remaining to give his team a 2 point lead, but it was not enough and Daniel Green willed his team to victory.
One of the best performances of the day came from Jacob Baker. As is the rule at Pistons Academy camp, players may not leave the lunch room and return to the basketball courts until all the trash from lunch, as well as any messes, have been cleaned up. The White Division was in a hurry to return to the court, and there was quite a bit of trash still on the tables. Jacob took it upon himself to go and pick up ALL of the mess, even though it was not his, so that the rest of the group could return to the gym. This was a great display of leadership and a willingness to do the right thing and be a good person, both of which are things we have talked about at camp this week. Great job, Jacob!
Thursday will feature the playoff rounds and finals in our free throw contest, 4-ball competition, and team play. The MVP race is also very close, and that will likely come down to the wire on Thursday afternoon. There are many players within striking distance, and a strong performance on Thursday could catapult nearly anyone into the lead for Camp MVP. “We are excited for what should be a fantastic finish to camp on Thursday! We look forward to watching the players compete and have a ton of fun,” said Camp Director Bryan Bollin.
