The Lady Pistons tipped off their late-fall workouts Sunday with an open gym period at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield. Eleven girls attended the one-hour workout which consisted of conditioning, defensive drills and scrimmaging. “I thought the girls were a little nervous at first but then really brought it together towards the end of the workout,” said Lady Pistons Coach Geo Thomas, “It was a good workout!”
Seven of the girls were returning from last years 6th grade Pistons Elite team. Their improvement over last season was evident as many of the girls impressed. Ava Rene Beard made a real nice basket in transition while being defended by a taller defender. Naija Darden shot the ball very well and made the final shot at the the Free-Throw/Conditioning Drill at the end of practice. Ella Sturtz was also impressive. “My initial thought that she is a bit too slow and methodical,” added Coach Geo,”But she calmly sank an open 17-foot jumper on one possession and then on the next, she up-faked and drove to the basket for an and-one. Ihave to say, very impressive.”
There were several new girls in attendance as well. Madeline and Madison made a huge impression with their shooting abilities. Both tallied the highest scores in the shoot-around. As well, Sarah and Gabby both dominated the boards and played some very solid defense in the scrimmage.
The next open gym is scheduled for Sunday, November 13 from 6:30-7:45pm at Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.
