The Pistons Academy Summer Camp Tour, presented by Kroger, rolled into Livonia this morning for Week 3 of our annual summer camp lineup. In partnership with the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit, our staff of Pistons Academy coaches welcomed a great group of campers at Frost Middle School in Livonia. For the past two weeks, we have had the pleasure of working with some fantastic campers. However, Day 1 of Livonia camp took it to a new level!
For starters, each and every camper arrived, checked-in, changed into their hoop shoes and were ready to go 10 minutes before our scheduled start time! This was a great first impression, showing our camper’s level of commitment and that they were all eager to get started and get to work! Throughout the day, the excitement level and passion for the game only continued to increase. Each camper was focused and serious about improving their game.
We wasted no time jumping right into things as the campers competed in 1-on-1, 3-on-3, and 5-on-5 games. We also began our 4-Ball competition, which is a team shooting competition. Standings will be kept in all contests as we gear up for the playoffs on Friday.
While many players competed hard and were a joy to coach, there were a couple of standout performances on Day 1. During the 1-on-1 competition, Dorian Thirkield came across a tough opponent and was having a hard time getting to the basket. His defender knocked the ball away while he was driving to the basket. Rather than letting the ball go out of bounds and taking it out at the top of the key, Dorian dove head-first towards the baseline to save his possession. This was incredible to watch, as that is the type of hustle and desire that coaches love to see. Benjamin Rosenfield was named Player of the Day as a result of his outstanding effort on both ends of the floor, his ability to focus and listen to the coaches, and his willingness to display great sportsmanship and respect for his opponents.
Here is a complete look at the camp standings after Day 1: Livonia Camp Update (Wednesday)
Impossible Question: The Detroit Pistons will be moving back to downtown Detroit next season as they begin play in the brand-new Little Caesars Arena. When was the last time (what year) the Pistons called downtown Detroit their home and in what arena did they play their games? Write your answer on a 3×5 piece of paper and turn it at check-in tomorrow for your chance to be entered into a raffle for an autographed piece of Pistons memorabilia!
Reminders: Livonia Camp will dismiss at 2:45pm this week. All players must check-in and place lunch orders in the morning. The camp store will be open again tomorrow (water, Gatorade, and snacks will be on sale for $1/each). There will be a short awards ceremony on Friday beginning at 2:25pm.
