QOTC D Stance

45 girls from various cities in southeast Michigan united at the Franklin Athletic Club Saturday to participate in the 2nd annual Queens of the Court Skills Clinic.

“We were very happy with the turnout” said Pistons Director of Fan Development, “We had girls of all ages and abilities playing and learning the game of basketball.  It was just awesome!”

The girls spend the first half of the session working on skill development and playing 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 games.  Coaches focused on keeping heads up when dribbling and chinning the ball when rebounding. “We had some very talented girls here tonight,” said long time Pistons Academy Coach Joey Berlin, “They picked up on our instruction quicker than most camps and then they used these techniques in the games.”

Many of the players quickly made names for themselves like Casey Cojocar.  “Casey was a very effective shooter for her team,” said Coach Jillian, “She was never greedy with the ball and made smart passes. She was fun to watch!”

Naomi Durant is another player that coaches picked up on. “Naomi was always working hard,” said Coach Joey Berlin, “She focused on learning and executing the fundamentals and was seriously good defender. Her “lock-down” defense was outstanding!”

Heavy drama was loaded in the 4-Ball championship where it took overtime to decide the winner of Eastern Michigan vs

Kentucky.  Lilly Gallaher had led a fierce comeback for Eastern at the end of regulation and forced the OT.  But with just six seconds remaining, and Kentucky trailing by three, Morgan Tyrpak hit her bonus 3-pointer (making the shot 6pts) and Kentucky held on to a 86-83 win.  Morgan’s team of Kylie, Aubrey and Maggie was strong and it was fun to watch them succeed.

In the free-throw competition, Mack Reid (#3) and Aubrey Zizelman (#4) upset top seeded shooters Shay Manchester (#1) and Sela Lefler (#2).  In the Championship round, Mack shot first and made an impressive 4 out of 5 shots. But Aubrey followed with an amazing 5-5 performance to win the FT Championship.

In the end, all the girls showed the hard work and sportsmanship that make youth sports rewarding and enjoyable. Check out our Facebook page to view the photo album of the day’s activities.
