The 2017 Pistons Academy Rookie Camp returns to Birmingham August 7-11, 2017.
“This is the 11th straight summer we have held the Rookie Camp in Birmingham and every year the camp gets bigger, better and more exciting,” says Camp Director Geo Thomas, “Its a week of camp that I look forward to every year!”
The Rookie Camp is for boys and girls entering grades 2-4 and is designed to teach and introduce basketball to the younger player. “We try to cover things other camps don’t cover,” adds Thomas, “Things such as rule comprehension, offensive and defensive concepts and proper team building. All at a level that younger players can understand.”
One of the unique features at the Rookie Camp is the personalized camp hooks. Each player receives a hook, or “locker” with a name plate above the hook. This summer, every camper will receive a personalized gear bag with plenty of Pistons giveaways. “Kids love to see their names,” adds Camp Director Aaron Smith, “We try to make this their camp by acknowledging that every player is unique and every player is important to the team concept.”
Along with the personal attention, the Pistons provide a great coaching staff that relates well to the younger camper. And of course Hooper will make his annual visit and put on a show that all kids find entertaining.
The Rookie Camp is offered at two convenient locations. Bingham Farms Elementary School which is located on 13 Mile between Telegraph and Lahser. And Greenfield Elementary School which is located off of 13 Mile Road, just west of Coolidge. Camp runs 9am-1pm each day with an awards ceremony on Friday where all campers are recognized for their efforts.
