The Pistons Academy summer camp tour, presented by Kroger, makes it’s annual stop at the Rookie Basketball Camp at Bingham Farms Elementary School.
As this year’s class of excited Rookies filed into the gymnasium at Bingham Farms Elementary School, you could tell there was something special about them. The energetic group of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders greeted our coaches with smiles and excitement as they headed into the “eCoach Locker Room” and found their personalized hooks and gear bags.
Following the opening drills, including the “Blake Griffin Defensive Drill,” campers played a little 1-on-1 and 3-on-3 as the coaches assessed the talent level. “We were impressed with the skill level of many of the campers today,” said Camp Coach Isaiah Smith. “They are a really fun group to work with and we are excited to teach them new skills and techniques over the course of the next few days,” he added.
Once players were separated into divisions and the preseason teams were formed, campers were put through various skill stations, allowing the coaches to refine and reinforce existing skills while introducing some new concepts.
In the afternoon skills challenge, it was a 4-way tie for first place, with the two remaining groups not too far behind.

Throughout Day 1 (Monday), there were some campers that really caught the attention of our coaches:
Coach Caitlyn on Xavier Jones: “Xavier was really getting after it during the morning skill stations. He was pushing and challenging himself at each station and his improvement was on full display.”
Coach Beth on Joey Lindman: “Joey got bumped a little bit in the morning 1-on-1 but I was very impressed by how he was able to bounce back and now he is a team captain. He is a tough player!”
Coach Dylan on Jett Velasquez: “Jett was working extremely hard in the ball handling stations and was also seen congratulating his whenever they did something good.”
Coach Marcus on Cayde Friedrichs: “Cayde was hustling all over the place today and really competed in the 1-on-1 portion of the day.”
Coach Terrah on Teddy Duross: “Teddy was really focused throughout the day and you could tell he takes his improvement seriously. He listens to the coaches and tries to learn from them as much as he can.”
Coach Isaiah on Miles Zeller: “Miles has a great attitude. He’s the type of player that any coach would love to have on their team.”
Coach Brady on Joshua Phillips: “Josh did a great job of implementing everything the coaches were talking about during stations and he was a leader on the court during the 5-on-5 games.”
