The fall session of our Pistons Academy Rookie Clinic concluded last night at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield. The 8-week instructional clinic for grades 1-3 covered the fundamental skills, as well as game rules and various game concepts in an energetic, exciting environment. This class of Rookies showed incredible dedication, work ethic, and enthusiasm throughout the fall as they showed up each week ready to learn and hoping to win one of the many Detroit Pistons prizes and giveaways (especially the free tickets!)
Skills covered throughout the program included ball handling, shooting, passing, footwork (pivots, jab steps, pump fakes), defense, and much more! “We exposed the players to a lot of new skills and techniques with the hope that they can master each skill through purposeful practice and consistency,” said Clinic Director Bryan Bollin. Players were also taught the rules of the game and even scrimmaged a little bit towards the end of the program.
On Week 1, Coach Bryan set two goals for this particular session of the Rookie Clinic.
Goal #1: Improve our skills and knowledge of the game! – “I am confident that over the course of this session each player has improved tremendously in a handful of areas. Many of the kids looked like completely different basketball players by the end of the class, which is a really cool thing to witness as a coach. I would like to congratulate all of the Rookies on their commitment to improving and the practice that they have put in to becoming better basketball players,” said Coach Bryan.
Goal #2: Have FUN! – “Nothing against any of the other groups I have worked with, as they have all been great, but this group of kids was probably the best group I have ever had as a coach! Their excitement and love for the Detroit Pistons was so obvious each and every week. You could tell that they loved coming to basketball practice and that makes myself, and all the other coaches, feel really good about the program. I cannot wait to continue working with these kids and watch them continue to grow and develop!” he explained.
At the end of the final class, each player was given a Clinic Report Card that highlighted some of the things they do well and some of the things they can improve on.
Thank you to all of the players and their parents for a successful fall Rookie Clinic! We hope to see you all in one of our winter programs.
