Thursday evening marked the final games of the regular season for our Pistons Academy Rookie League in Southfield.
Spurs 22, Hawks 8: The talented trio of Tyler Ruth, Xavier Jones, and Austin Gillery powered the Spurs to a strong start as they led 6-0 after the first 6 minutes of play, with each player scoring 2 points. An active defense and high-powered fast break once again served as the catalyst for this undefeated Spurs team. The Hawks (0-2-1) got on the board late in the first half as Braylon Fields (2 pts, 4reb) knocked down a jumper from the right side. After trailing 10-2 at the half, the Hawks made some adjustments and started to get things going on the offensive end. Xan Scheinfield (4 points) and Tarek Agha (2 points) combined for 6 points in the third quarter for the Hawks, but still trailed 18-8 entering the final 8 minutes of the game. The Spurs would respond, however, as strong defense from Jordan Greer, Christopher Mosely, Jonah Zack (2pts, 3stls), and Will Zelenock shut the Hawks down for the remainder of the game. Tyler Ruth scored a game-high 10 points, with Xavier Jones adding 6 points. Austin Gillery netted 4 points. The Spurs (3-0-0) claimed the #1 seed in the Rookie League Playoffs (Thursday, Dec. 7th & 14th). The Hawks (0-2-1) will be the 4th seed in the playoffs, setting up a REMATCH! of these two teams. The Hawks will look to shock the world by upsetting the top seed, while the Spurs look to punch their ticket to the Rookie League Finals.
Celtics 15, Lakers 14: The Lakers had several players contribute offensively on Thursday night, as five players were able to get in the scoring column. Jackson Mansfield led the Lakers with 5 points, Parker Rost scored 3 points, and Carter Rowls, Travis Davis and Joseph Bradley each added 2 points. The balanced scoring effort was not enough, however, as the Lakers suffered a heart-breaking loss in a close game against the talented Celtics. Carter Williams was impressive for the Celtics, once again, as dropped in 7 points including a 3-pointer in the first half. Tyler Robinson had a strong game with 4 points and an assist, while Jamir Goodall and Ziv Ferber each scored a bucket of their own. The Celtics have rebounded nicely from their opening week defeat, rattling off 2 straight victories. They will be the #2 seed in the Rookie League Playoffs. The Lakers will be the #3 seed, as they finished in front of the 4th seeded Hawks, setting up a rematch with the Celtics in the opening round.
Playoffs will begin next week (12/7). Playoff seeding is determined by the final regular season standings. Each team will have 2 more games:
