Week 3 of our Pistons Academy Rookie Skills Clinic featured a bit of everything on Tuesday evening inside the gym at Franklin Athletic Club. First, players were led through a warm-up that emphasized teamwork, communication, and encouragement. Shortly after, the younger and older players went head to head in a high-energy drill that stressed the importance of defense! This particular drill emphasized getting low in a defensive stance, using active hands, being light on your feet with quick movements, and outworking their opponents. “The energy during our first defensive drill tonight was outstanding! I couldn’t decide who won (the older of younger players) because both groups did such a great job!” said Clinic Director Bryan Bollin.
Next, players continued to work on ball handling drills and even picked up a few new moves. The triple-threat position was taught, as well as the basics of a pivot, jab step, and pass fake. The players had a lot of fun trying to spell the word, “pivot,” but weren’t able to come up with the proper spelling. “Yeah, we had an autographed picture of Tobias Harris for whoever could spell “pivot” correctly, but nobody could get it! They were so close!” added Coach Bryan.
