The Ultimate Hoops Week has been voted as the best basketball camp in the United States for the past three years* and 2015 is expected to be bigger and better than ever. “This by far is our most entertaining week of summer,” says Pistons Director of Fan Development, Geo Thomas, “Every camper leaves with an experience that will last them a lifetime.”
The Ultimate Hoops Week staff has been preparing for this week all summer long. In fact, many of the coaches have been training since February. “Every year I try to deliver a better experience than the one before,” says Camp Commissioner Dan Thomas, “Brushing up on officiating, coaching and even first aid helps us all to be better coaches.”
“One of the coolest things we do is teach memorization skills so that every coach will know every camper’s name by mid-week,” says Thomas, “In fact, we challenge our Camp Operations Manager, Jim Arlen, to memorize parent names as well. You should see the looks on the faces of the parents when we address them by their first name at check in. Its pretty cool!”
The Ultimate Hoops Week is designed to deliver the best instruction, competitive games, thrilling contests and, most importantly, the most fun a kid can have at camp. “You can tell this camp is different than any other,” says Camp Director Aaron Smith, “As soon as you walk in the gym you get a sense of how entertaining the week will be.”
Every camper will be assigned a camp locker with their name above their hooks. When they walk in, they will find a Pistons gear-bag full of useful Pistons Academy equipment. From water bottles to team towels, players will receive the stuff that makes them feel like a Pro. As well, campers can use this locker all weak to store the gear they bring to camp.
Throughout the week, campers will be thrilled by some of the most entertaining assets the Pistons have to offer. Scheduled to appear this year are the Flight Crew (the Pistons Dunk Team), Hooper, the Drum Line, Piston Legend Earl Cureton and a few of the Piston Players themselves. Last year, Spencer Dinwiddie came by and spoke about how to overcome adversity and the importance of relying on family. In 2013, Andre Drummond led a “Dunk-Off,” with some of our coaches. It was an amazing show!
And of course the instruction is top-level. Most of the staff are past campers who are now starring on their varsity or collegiate teams. All of the camp’s instructors have graduated from the “EDUCATE-ELEVATE-EXCITE” training program which only the Detroit Pistons have access to. This program readies our coaches for every camp scenario –from teaching skills and officiating to anti-bullying and emergency response protocols. “Our staff can handle any situation at camp effectively and efficiently,” says Arlen, “We really do have an amazing staff of coaches.”
The result of all the training, entertainment, games, contests and giveaways is an ULTIMATE experience that our campers will remember for a lifetime. This is what summer is all about!
