The third week of the Pistons Academy YMCA clinic at the South Oakland YMCA was a strong one as all the players showed improvement. “We are moving along nicely with our skill development,” said coach Geo Thomas, “This has been a fun class to instruct.”
There were many shining moments during the clinic but most came during the half-court scrimmage. Defensively, nobody played better than Julian Vanner who was able to “Zen” his way to some amazing steals and countless rebounds. “Julian is a fighter for sure,” added Coach Geo, “He has so much potential.”
Daniel, Michael and Eoin continued to show their improvement with their passing and point guard play. All three have mastered dribbling with their heads up and the result has been some very nice passes for assists.
Byron Scott played his usual strong post offense and was able to gather in seven rebounds on the day. Newcomer Bryce displayed both his offensive skills and sportsmanship as he was unstoppable to the basket. He also was the first player to help up a teammate when they were down. Coach Geo commented: “He was awesome today. Love Bryce’s positive attitude!”
The brightest star Monday though had to be Dorien Claxton as he scored a season high 12 points in the scrimmage. “I’m just feeling good,” said Dorien after the clinic. “This is my first time playing and I’m having fun.” Dorien’s previous high in the scrimmage was 2 points last week. “Big D has been awesome,” added Coach Geo, “He is really working hard to be the best he can. He has passion and determination and I can see some bright moments in his future!”
There are four clinics left at the Clinic which is held every Monday at the SO YMCA in Royal Oak. To find out more, contact Coach Geo Thomas at email@example.com.
