The Pistons Academy Camp Tour concluded its first week on Friday as 93 campers attended the camp at Franklin Athletic Camp in Southfield. “It was a great start to the summer,” mentioned Coach Geo Thomas, “The kids had their usual energy and it really was a lot of fun to be a part of.”
There were many other impressive performances including Joshua Gibson‘s 28-foot 3-point shot at the buzzer in the White division playoff game which gave his team a thrilling 9-8 victory. “As soon as he launched it, I knew it was good,” said Coach Bryan Bollin, “It was a clutch shot to say the least.” After the basket beat the buzzer, over 60 campers rushed the court and mobbed Gibson. “It was pretty cool,” Gibson would say later, “I really thought it was going in when I shot it.”
In the 4-Ball competition, #4 seeded Baylor won the Steph Curry Division Championship with a solid 17 point win over Duke. Jaden Jimenez (captain) scored an impressive 39 points as the final shooter and led his team to victory.
The camp concluded with many other award winners including Camp MVP Sammy Robinson. It was his first Pistons MVP award and he gave a memorable acceptance speech. “I think its important to always have a positive attitude and help your teammates out,” Sammy said in front of the camp, “And I’d like to thank my coaches, Ian, Max and Bryan. They all helped me in so many areas.”
Brendan McGlinchey finished a close second, only a few points behind Sammy. Isabel Kulick was thrird and our top female player for the week.
