With our Fall leagues cancelled due to facility closings, the Pistons Academy is now focusing on outdoor fall basketball programs.  “After Labor Day, we will be offering programs in both Birmingham and Novi,” Says Pistons Director of Fan Development, Geo Thomas, “Although we’d love to be indoors, we feel that we can offer some fantastic outdoor programs.”

An outdoor skills clinic in Birmingham is scheduled to start September 15 and run for four consecutive Tuesdays.  This will be for boys and girls in grades 3-8.  A similar drills and skills session is being planned in Novi on Wednesdays.

Also in Birmingham, Friday Night Lights girls basketball will resume with a 5-week session starting on Friday, September 11.  This FNL season will be for girls in grades 5-7. Check out all outdoor Fall programs HERE!

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about our fall leagues, please contact Geo Thomas at gthpomas@pistons.com.

The Pistons Academy offers many levels of youth basketball leagues throughout the year.  Our Pistons Leagues offer a division for every player and are designed for the intermediate to advanced player. These leagues are directed by seasoned professionals who understand what makes a league enjoyable for players and parents alike.  Games run on time and we only use experienced officials and scorekeepers.  Players will enjoy warm-up music, in-game announcements, weekly newsletters and game recaps posted on our website. Season ends with a post-season tournament and all players receive a free ticket to a Pistons home game.

We currently have three Pistons Leagues:
Birmingham:  Through Birmingham Public Schools (Fall and Winter)
Southfield:  At the Franklin Athletic Club (Fall, Winter and Spring)
Royal Oak: (Spring)

We also operate two All-Girl Leagues:
Friday Night Lights  Grades 2-4 (JV) & 4-6 (VARSITY) play every Friday night in Birmingham (Fall, Winter, Spring)
Girls Middle School League  Grades 6-8 have Saturday games and either Thursday or Saturday practices (Winter)

Partner Leagues:

Pistons-1098It is the Pistons Academy’s intent to provide an opportunity for parents and players to experience basketball in an arena based on sportsmanship and competitive play. We will make every effort to provide an environment regarded as organized, competitive, professional and rewarding. We will not accept any parent, coach, player or person who places our intent at risk.

Our leagues are structured and designed to provide valuable game experience to all who participate. The league is NOT designed to teach the fundamentals. Rather, coaches focus mostly on game strategy and rule comprehension. All of our referees are MHSAA certified. We also use MHSAA Legacy officials (high school age) who have been trained to officiate youth league games.

Players register as individuals and are placed on teams via a draft system. Although we do take requests for players to play with their friends, there is no guarantee that will happen. In most cases, we can place siblings on the same team.

There is guaranteed playing time for all players. However, this guaranteed playing time is not equal playing time. Every player is guaranteed to play 40% of the game and their minutes are recorded by the scorekeeper. We have players of all skill levels in our league but the bulk of our players have prior game experience. We ask that if your child has never played organized basketball that you start with one of our skill clinics.

Sportsmanship is enforced at all times. Players showing poor sportsmanship on a consistent basis will be dismissed from the league without refund. Spectator behavior is closely monitored and our coaches understand that poor behavior will not be tolerated. If you are looking for an ultra-competitive program where winning is top priority…this isn’t it –keep looking.
